About Me

Hello! My name is Amy Ferguson Moncure, and I am here to help your student succeed and even love math! Math Coach Amy has been helping students online since 2019!

I am a certified math teacher and have taught in both public and private schools for 15 years spanning 5th through 12th grades. I have been the Instructional Math Dean at a 6A high school, wrote curriculum for a district, and was selected as a state finalist for the 2013 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. In addition, I have earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Computer Science.

The Early Years

In my early teaching career, I taught 5th through 8th grade math at a small private school. As the only middle school math teacher, I had the opportunity to watch students grow mathematically from year to year over the course of four years. I learned that developmentally some topics were easier to learn as the student matured. For example, in 5th grade, many students struggled with fractions even though we had been working on it for two months. In 6th grade, these same students needed a couple of weeks to master all fraction operations. In 7th grade, we reviewed fractions for a week, and as 8th graders it was a one day review. Those same 5th graders with fraction frowns on their faces, found the concepts easier and easier as they matured and their math foundation increased. Developmentally, the math brain does grow from year to year not just in knowledge but in ability too.

To High School and Beyond!

Moving to high school courses, I learned that a student’s Algebra foundation is key to high school success, and those pesky fractions and decimal operations still cause many students difficulties. How many PreCalculus and Calculus students find themselves with the wrong answer after half a page of calculations, even though they completely understand the advanced math, because of a simple fraction mistake?

As students move through the high school curriculum, the right answer is only the beginning. Math is so much more than a bunch of rules to apply to get to the next step. Helping students explain why they are performing certain steps, what the answer means, and how to check the correctness of the answer creates thinking skills that students will use long past high school and college.

My Goal!

My goal is to help your student be strong and confident in their math class, to help them break down a problem, and think about how they would like to approach it. As in life, there are many different ways to tackle a problem. The bigger your tool set, the more options you have.

I am excited to work together with your student to help build that math future. Please let me know how I can help or if you have any questions: amy@mathcoachamy.com
