Rational Exponents and Radical Expressions

Convert radicals to rational exponents, and convert rational exponents back to radicals.

What to Remember

Root to denominator

The index of the radical becomes the denominator.

\(\sqrt[n]{a^m} = a^{\frac{m}{n}}\)

\(\sqrt[3]{x^2}\)

The root is 3. The power is 2.

\(x^{\frac{2}{3}}\)

Denominator to root

The denominator of the exponent becomes the index of the radical.

\(a^{\frac{m}{n}} = \sqrt[n]{a^m}\)

\(x^{\frac{1}{2}}\) = \(\sqrt{x}\)

Pull out whole powers

If the numerator is larger than the denominator, split off a whole power so the leftover exponent is less than 1.

\(\frac{3}{2} = 1 + \frac{1}{2}\)

\(x^{\frac{3}{2}} = x \cdot x^{\frac{1}{2}} = x\sqrt{x}\)

More than one variable

Convert each variable the same way. Keep the factors multiplied.

\(\sqrt[3]{x^2 y}\) = \(x^{\frac{2}{3}} y^{\frac{1}{3}}\)

Different denominators

If the denominators are not the same, use a common denominator so there is one root.

\(x^{\frac{1}{2}} y^{\frac{1}{3}}\)

The denominators are 2 and 3. The common denominator is 6.

\(x^{\frac{1}{2}} = x^{\frac{3}{6}}\)

\(y^{\frac{1}{3}} = y^{\frac{2}{6}}\)

\(x^{\frac{3}{6}} y^{\frac{2}{6}} = \sqrt[6]{x^{3} y^{2}}\)

A. \(p^{\frac{3}{5}} q^{\frac{1}{3}} r^{\frac{2}{3}}\) B. \(p^{\frac{5}{3}} q^{3} r^{\frac{2}{3}}\) C. \(p^{5} q r^{2}\) D. \(p^{\frac{5}{3}} q^{\frac{1}{3}} r^{\frac{3}{2}}\) E. \(p^{\frac{5}{3}} q^{\frac{1}{3}} r^{\frac{2}{3}}\)
Show Answer

Radical to Rational · Hard

\(\sqrt[3]{p^{5} q r^{2}}\)

\(\sqrt[n]{a^m} = a^{\frac{m}{n}}\)

The root is 3, so the denominator is 3.

The power inside is the numerator.

p has power 5 inside.

\(p^{\frac{5}{3}}\)

q has power 1 inside.

\(q^{\frac{1}{3}}\)

r has power 2 inside.

\(r^{\frac{2}{3}}\)

\(p^{\frac{5}{3}} q^{\frac{1}{3}} r^{\frac{2}{3}}\)

Answer: E

6
Rewrite using radicals. \(a^{\frac{5}{3}} b^{\frac{5}{2}}\)
A. \(a b^{2} \sqrt[6]{a^{4} b^{3}}\) B. \(\sqrt[6]{a^{10} b^{15}}\) C. \(a^{2} b^{2} \sqrt[6]{a^{4} b^{3}}\) D. \(a b \sqrt[6]{a^{4} b^{3}}\) E. \(a b^{2} \sqrt[6]{a^{5} b^{5}}\)
Show Answer

Rational to Radical · Hard

\(a^{\frac{5}{3}} b^{\frac{5}{2}}\)

The denominators are 3 and 2. The common denominator is 6.

\(\frac{5}{3} = \frac{5 \times 2}{3 \times 2} = \frac{10}{6}\)

\(a^{\frac{5}{3}} = a^{\frac{10}{6}}\)

\(\frac{5}{2} = \frac{5 \times 3}{2 \times 3} = \frac{15}{6}\)

\(b^{\frac{5}{2}} = b^{\frac{15}{6}}\)

\(a^{\frac{10}{6}} b^{\frac{15}{6}}\)

\(\frac{10}{6} = 1 + \frac{4}{6}\)

\(a^{\frac{10}{6}} = a \cdot a^{\frac{4}{6}}\)

\(\frac{15}{6} = 2 + \frac{3}{6}\)

\(b^{\frac{15}{6}} = b^{2} \cdot b^{\frac{3}{6}}\)

Same root on what is left. Write one radical.

\(a^{\frac{4}{6}} b^{\frac{3}{6}} = \sqrt[6]{a^{4} b^{3}}\)

\(a b^{2} \sqrt[6]{a^{4} b^{3}}\)
