What to Remember

Point-slope form

y − y₁ = m(x − x₁). Put the slope in for m and the point in for (x₁, y₁).

The signs

A positive x₁ or y₁ stays after a minus. A negative x₁ or y₁ becomes a plus.

Two points

Find the slope, then use the first point. If the x-values match, the line is vertical: x = a.

Easy

Integer slope

m = 2

The point is (3, 5).

Answer: y − 5 = 2(x − 3)

y + 2 = 25(x − 5)

Answer: y + 2 = 25(x − 5)

3
Write the point-slope equation with slope −13 through (6, 4).

The point is (−8, 2).

y − 2 = 14(x + 8)

Answer: y − 2 = 14(x + 8)

Hard

Two points

Find the slope, then use the first point.

Example
Write the point-slope equation of the line through (1, 2) and (4, 8). Use (1, 2).

m = y₂ − y₁x₂ − x₁

m = 63

m = 2

Use (1, 2).

y − y₁ = m(x − x₁)

y − 2 = 2(x − 1)

Answer: y − 2 = 2(x − 1)

1
Write the point-slope equation of the line through (2, 5) and (6, 13). Use (2, 5).
Show Answer

m = y₂ − y₁x₂ − x₁

m = 84

m = 2

Use (2, 5).

y − y₁ = m(x − x₁)

y − 5 = 2(x − 2)

Answer: y − 5 = 2(x − 2)

2
Write the point-slope equation of the line through (−1, 4) and (3, −4). Use (−1, 4).
Show Answer

m = y₂ − y₁x₂ − x₁

m = −84

4
Write the point-slope equation of the line through (3, 7) and (3, −1). Use (3, 7).
Show Answer

The x-values are the same, so the run is 0.

The slope is undefined, so point-slope form does not apply.

The equation is x = 3.

Answer: x = 3

5
Write the point-slope equation of the line through (4, −2) and (8, 4). Use (4, −2).
Show Answer

m = y₂ − y₁x₂ − x₁
