Graph a System of Inequalities

Show the solution set for a system of two linear inequalities with two variables on a graph.

Jump to section:

≥/≤ solid  ·  >/< dashed

Solution = overlap

What to Remember

Graph each inequality first

Solid or dashed, above or below, just as with one inequality.

The solution is the overlap

A point must make both inequalities true. Shade each half-plane, then keep only where the shading stacks.

Two colors help

One color per inequality. The overlap is the solution region.

Test a point in both

Pick a point in the overlap, such as (0, 0) when it is allowed, and check both original inequalities.

Super Challenge

Super Challenge

1
A system is x ≥ 0, y ≥ 0, x + y ≤ 6, and 2x + y ≤ 8. Find the corner points of the feasible region.
Show Answer

The axes give (0, 0).

x = 0 and x + y = 6 → (0, 6).

y = 0 and 2x + y = 8 → (4, 0).

x + y = 6 and 2x + y = 8.

Subtract: x = 2, so y = 4.

Corner points: (0, 0), (0, 6), (2, 4), (4, 0).

Answer: (0, 0), (0, 6), (2, 4), (4, 0)

2
The system y ≥ x and y ≤ x − 2 looks like two half-planes. Does it have any solutions? Explain with slopes.
Show Answer

Both boundaries have slope 1.

y ≥ x is on or above y = x.

y ≤ x − 2 is on or below a parallel line two units down.

The half-planes do not overlap, so there is no solution.

Answer: no solution

3
Graph y > 2 and x ≤ −1. Name one point in the overlap and one point that fails exactly one inequality.
Show Answer

Graph each boundary.

First: y > 2

Draw y = 2 dashed.

Shade above.

Second: x ≤ −1

Draw x = −1 solid.

Shade to the left.

The solution is the overlap.

(−3, 4) is in the overlap: 4 > 2 and −3 ≤ −1.

(0, 4) has y > 2 true but x ≤ −1 false.

(−3, 0) has x ≤ −1 true but y > 2 false.

Answer: overlap e.g. (−3, 4)
