Add and Subtract Polynomials

Find sums and differences of polynomials using like terms, a minus distributed, and tile pictures.

Jump to section:

What to Remember

Like terms

Add or subtract the coefficients of matching powers. x² and x are not like terms.

Subtract means distribute a minus

Change every sign in the polynomial you are subtracting, then combine.

Hands-on and pictures

Algebra tiles: same-size tiles combine. A zero pair is one positive tile with one negative tile of the same size.

Degree stays

Adding does not raise the degree. Canceling the leading terms can lower it.

Level 1

Easy

Add two trinomials. Integer coefficients.

Example
Simplify. (2x² + 3x + 1) + (x² + 4x + 5)

2x² + x² = 3x²

3x + 4x = 7x

1 + 5 = 6

3x² + 7x + 6

Answer: 3x² + 7x + 6

1
Simplify. (4x + 7) + (2x − 3)
Show Answer

6x + 4

Answer: 6x + 4

2
Simplify. (x² + 5) + (3x² − 2)
Show Answer

4x² + 3

Answer: 4x² + 3

3
Simplify. (6x² − x + 4) + (x² + x − 1)
Show Answer

7x² + 3

Answer: 7x² + 3

4
Simplify. (5x − 2) − (3x + 1)
Show Answer

Distribute the minus.

5x − 2 − 3x − 1

2x − 3

Answer: 2x − 3

5
A 5-tile and a 2-tile of the same size. Combined, how many, and as an expression 5x + 2x?
Show Answer

7 tiles of that size.

7x

Answer: 7x

Level 2

Medium

Subtract a trinomial, or a missing term.

Example
Simplify. (5x² − 2x + 1) − (2x² + 3x − 4)

Distribute the minus.

5x² − 2x + 1 − 2x² − 3x + 4

3x² − 5x + 5

Answer: 3x² − 5x + 5

1
Simplify. (3x² + x) − (x² − 4x + 2)
Show Answer

3x² + x − x² + 4x − 2

2x² + 5x − 2

Answer: 2x² + 5x − 2

2
Simplify. (4x³ + 2x − 1) + (x³ − 5x + 6)
Show Answer

5x³ − 3x + 5

Answer: 5x³ − 3x + 5

3
Simplify. (7x² − 3x + 8) − (7x² + x − 2)
Show Answer

−4x + 10

Answer: −4x + 10

4
The picture is a 3-by-x rectangle plus 2 extra unit tiles, take away an x rectangle. Write the result.
Show Answer

(3x + 2) − x = 2x + 2

Answer: 2x + 2

5
Simplify. (x² + 4x + 4) + (x² − 4x + 4)
Show Answer

2x² + 8

Answer: 2x² + 8

Level 3

Hard

More terms, or a subtraction that cancels the quadratic.

Example
Simplify. (2x³ − x² + 4x − 1) − (x³ − 3x² + x + 5)

2x³ − x² + 4x − 1 − x³ + 3x² − x − 5

x³ + 2x² + 3x − 6

Answer: x³ + 2x² + 3x − 6

1
Simplify. (4x² + 3x − 5) − (4x² − 3x − 5)
Show Answer

6x

Answer: 6x

2
Find p so that (x² + px + 1) + (2x² − 4x + 3) = 3x² − x + 4.
Show Answer

p − 4 = −1

p = 3

Answer: p = 3

3
A rectangle of tiles is (2x² + 5x + 3) and you remove (x² + x + 1). What remains?
Show Answer

x² + 4x + 2

Answer: x² + 4x + 2

4
Simplify. (3x + 2) + (x − 5) − (4x − 1)
Show Answer

3x + 2 + x − 5 − 4x + 1

−2

Answer: −2

5
Show (x² + 2x + 1) − (x + 1)² = 0 two ways: expand, and think of tiles.
Show Answer

(x + 1)² = x² + 2x + 1

Subtracting the same polynomial leaves 0.

The tiles for a square of side x + 1 are exactly x² + 2x + 1.

Answer: 0

Super Challenge

Super Challenge

1
Is addition of polynomials commutative? Show with (x + 2) + (3x − 1).
Show Answer

Either order gives 4x + 1.

Commutative property of addition on like terms.

Answer: 4x + 1 either order

2
Find two different polynomials that add to x² + 5x + 6, one of them x + 2.
Show Answer

(x² + 5x + 6) − (x + 2) = x² + 4x + 4

(x + 2) + (x² + 4x + 4) = x² + 5x + 6

Answer: x² + 4x + 4

3
A student writes (5x − 1) − (2x − 3) = 5x − 1 − 2x − 3 = 3x − 4. Correct the minus.
Show Answer

The 3 must change sign too: − (2x − 3) = −2x + 3.

5x − 1 − 2x + 3 = 3x + 2

Answer: 3x + 2
