Write vertex form when a is greater than 1, solve when the square needs a fraction, and complete the square when x² is negative.

Jump to section:

Vertex form, a > 1
f(x) = 5x² − 20x + 3

Factor a from the x terms.

Set equation = 0.

Move the number part over by adding opposites.

Complete the square inside the parentheses.

Multiply that corner by a. That product goes on the right.

Move the number part back over.

Fractions in the square
4x² − 3x = 10

Divide by a.

Take half of the new x term, then square that half.

Add the square on both sides.

The formula is

x − h = ±square root of k

Negative x²
−2x² = 4x + 7

Move the x² term over by adding opposites.

Complete the square with the positive x².
