Zeros of a Difference of Powers

Factor a sum or difference of cubes, then solve. A sixth power splits into two cubes.

Jump to section:

x³ − a³ = (x − a)(x² + ax + a²)

x⁶ − a⁶ = (x³ − a³)(x³ + a³)

What to Remember

A cube

x³ − a³ = (x − a)(x² + ax + a²)

x³ + a³ = (x + a)(x² − ax + a²)

Set each factor equal to 0. The quadratic needs the quadratic formula.

A sixth power

x⁶ − a⁶ = (x³ − a³)(x³ + a³). Solve both cubes.

Find all zeros of x⁶ − 4096 = 0
Show Answer

x⁶ − 4096 = (x³ − 64)(x³ + 64)

Set each factor equal to 0.

x³ − 64 = 0

x³ − 64 = (x)³ − (4)³

a³ − b³ = (a − b)(a² + ab + b²)

a = x

b = 4

(x − 4)(x² + 4x + 16) = 0

x − 4 = 0

x = 4

x² + 4x + 16 = 0

x = −b ± square root of b² − 4ac2a

x = −4 ± square root of 4² − 4(1)(16)2

b² − 4ac = −48

A negative under the square root gives an imaginary number.

square root of −48 = i square root of 48

i square root of 48 = 4isquare root of 3

x = −4 ± 4isquare root of 32

Divide the numerator and the denominator by 2.

x = −2 + 2isquare root of 3

x = −2 − 2isquare root of 3

x³ + 64 = 0

x³ + 64 = (x)³ + (4)³

a³ + b³ = (a + b)(a² − ab + b²)

a = x

b = 4

(x + 4)(x² − 4x + 16) = 0

x + 4 = 0

x = −4

x² − 4x + 16 = 0

x = −b ± square root of b² − 4ac2a

x = 4 ± square root of 4² − 4(1)(16)2

b² − 4ac = −48

A negative under the square root gives an imaginary number.

square root of −48 = i square root of 48

i square root of 48 = 4isquare root of 3

x = 4 ± 4isquare root of 32

Divide the numerator and the denominator by 2.

x = 2 + 2isquare root of 3

x = 2 − 2isquare root of 3

Answer: x = 4
x = −2 + 2isquare root of 3 or x = −2 − 2isquare root of 3
x = −4
x = 2 + 2isquare root of 3 or x = 2 − 2isquare root of 3
