Algebraic Limits

When substitution gives 0/0, factor, cancel, or rationalize, then substitute again.

Jump to section:

\(\dfrac{0}{0}\) means factor or rationalize

then substitute

What to Remember

0 over 0 is not the answer

If substituting gives \(\dfrac{0}{0}\), factor, cancel, or rationalize. Then substitute again.

Cancel matching factors

A common factor in the numerator and denominator is 1, as long as \(x \neq a\). Limits do not care about the missing point.

Factor a power of x

If every term has \(x\) or \(x^2\), factor that power out of the top and bottom, then cancel.

Complex fractions

Get a single fraction in the numerator first. Then divide by the leftover \(x\).

Level 1

Easy

Factor a difference of squares, cancel, then substitute.

Example
Find \(\lim_{x \to 3} \dfrac{x - 3}{x^2 - 9}.\)

Factor.

\(\dfrac{x - 3}{(x - 3)(x + 3)}\)

Cancel \(x - 3\).

\(\dfrac{1}{x + 3}\)

Substitute \(x = 3\).

\(\dfrac{1}{3 + 3}\)
