Data Displays

Choose a line plot, a stem-and-leaf plot, a circle graph, or a histogram.

Jump to section:

What to Remember

Line plot

A line plot shows every value. It works well when the data set is small.

You can see each number and which number appears most often.

Stem-and-leaf plot

A stem-and-leaf plot keeps the actual numbers and shows the shape.

The stem is the front of the number. The leaf is the last digit.

Circle graph

A circle graph shows parts of a whole. Use it for categories.

Favorite color, favorite lunch, and way of getting to school are categories.

Histogram

A histogram groups numerical data into intervals. The bars touch, and the height is the count.

It shows the shape and hides the exact values. A list of 40 scores grouped by tens fits a histogram. Favorite color does not.

Level 1

Easy

Name the display, or match it to the phrase.
