7th Grade Math · Unit 2
Find absolute values, compare them, and use them for distance.
Distance from 0
The absolute value of a number is its distance from 0.
|−8| = 8 and |5| = 5.
The sign drops out
|−4| and |4| are equal.
Both numbers are 4 units from 0.
Order the distances
Replace each absolute value with its distance, then order those distances.
Equal distances stay equal.
Distance between two numbers
The distance between a and b is |a − b|.
|−3 − 5| = |−8| = 8.
