7th Grade Math · Unit 3
Multiply each term inside the parentheses. Then combine like terms.
Multiply every term
The number in front multiplies each term inside the parentheses.
3(x + 4) = 3x + 12.
A minus in front multiplies by −1
A negative sign in front of parentheses is the same as multiplying by −1.
−(x + 4) = −x − 4.
Then combine like terms
After you distribute, combine terms with the same variable. Numbers combine with numbers.
Keep the sign with the term. Write one term for each variable, then the number.
Multiply the number by each term inside the parentheses.
