Euler Diagrams

Draw a nested diagram for an if-then, plot people, and say what you can conclude.

Jump to section:

p → q: p inside q

outside q → outside p

What to Remember

If p, then q

Draw a small circle p completely inside a larger circle q. Everything in p is also in q.

Do not put an x yet. This picture is the rule for everyone, not one person or object.

Anyone outside q is automatically outside p.

Inside the inner circle

Think of p as a floaty inside of the pool q. If you are in the floaty, then you are in the pool.

Put an x only when the problem names a specific person or thing, or uses a word like “some.” The x stands for that one thing.

If x is in the floaty, then x is in the pool.

The contrapositive is the same picture

If you are not in the pool, then you are not in the floaty. That is ∼q → ∼p.

Example: If it is a puppy (p), then it is cute (q). Item x is not cute. Put x outside q. Then x is not a puppy.

Only in the outer ring

If you only know that you are in the swimming pool, you may or may not be in the floaty. No conclusion can be made.

Level 1

Easy

Read a nested Euler diagram. Who is inside, in the ring, or outside?

Example
Conditional: If you complete the lab, then you may leave early. The Euler diagram is shown.
Kai completed the lab. Where does Kai go, and what can you conclude?

Kai is inside the inner circle.

Kai may leave early.

Answer: inner circle; Kai may leave early

1
Use this diagram. Riley may leave early. Plot Riley in the outer ring (not known to be in the inner circle). What can you conclude about the lab?
Show Answer

Riley is in “leave early,” but not necessarily in “lab done.”

No conclusion about whether Riley completed the lab.

Answer: no conclusion about the lab

2
Use this diagram. Jess did not leave early. Where does Jess go, and what can you conclude?
Show Answer

Outside “leave early” is also outside “lab done.”

Jess did not complete the lab.

Answer: outside; Jess did not complete the lab

3
Draw the Euler diagram for: If a figure is a square, then it is a rhombus.
Show Answer

Outer region: rhombus. Inner region: square.

Answer: square inside rhombus

4
Conditional: If a student has a permit, then the student may park. Draw the Euler diagram.
Show Answer

Outer: may park. Inner: has permit.

Answer: permit inside may park

5
Use this diagram. Tessa may park. Can you conclude that Tessa has a permit?
Show Answer

Tessa could be in the outer ring only.

No.

Answer: no

6
Draw the Euler diagram for the converse of: If a figure is a kite, then it is a quadrilateral.
Show Answer

Converse: switch. If a figure is a quadrilateral, then it is a kite.

The inner and outer regions swap.

Answer: quadrilateral inside kite

7
Draw the Euler diagram for the inverse of: If you have a library card, then you may check out a book.
Show Answer

Inverse: If you do not have a library card, then you may not check out a book.

The inverse is the same picture as the converse: swap inner and outer.

Answer: may check out a book inside has library card

Level 2

Medium

Draw the diagram for a conditional or for its contrapositive, then plot people.

Example
Conditional: If a student completed the review, then the quiz felt easier. Draw the Euler diagram. Then plot Devon, who says the quiz felt easier. Can you conclude that Devon completed the review?

Devon is in the outer region. That does not force the inner region.

No.

Answer: no

1
Write the contrapositive of “If you complete the lab, then you may leave early,” then draw the Euler diagram for the contrapositive.
Show Answer

If you may not leave early, then you did not complete the lab.

That is the same nested picture: lab done inside leave early.

Answer: same diagram as the original conditional

2
Conditional: If a polygon is a pentagon, then it has 5 sides. Plot pentagon ABCDE on the diagram. What can you conclude?
Show Answer

ABCDE has 5 sides.

Answer: ABCDE has 5 sides

3
Use this diagram. Plot a polygon Q that does not have 5 sides. What can you conclude?
Show Answer

Q is not a pentagon.

Answer: Q is not a pentagon

4
Conditional: If you are in orchestra, then you can read music. Priya can read music. Plot Priya, and say what you can conclude.
Show Answer

No conclusion about orchestra.

Answer: no conclusion about orchestra

5
Same conditional. Omar is not in orchestra. Where can Omar go on the diagram? What can you conclude about reading music?
Show Answer

Omar is not in the inner circle.

He could be in the outer ring or outside both circles.

No conclusion about reading music.

Answer: no conclusion about reading music

6
Write the converse of “If a student is on the debate team, then the student has a Saturday tournament.” Draw the Euler diagram for the converse.
Show Answer

Converse: If a student has a Saturday tournament, then the student is on the debate team.

The inner and outer regions swap.

Answer: Saturday tournament inside debate team

7
Write the inverse of “If the oven is on, then the kitchen is warm.” Draw the Euler diagram for the inverse.
Show Answer

Inverse: If the oven is not on, then the kitchen is not warm.

The inverse is the same picture as the converse: swap inner and outer.

Answer: kitchen warm inside oven on

Level 3

Hard

The contrapositive uses the same nesting. An X outside the outer region is ∼q.

Example
Write “Players run faster after they warm up” in if-then form, write the contrapositive, and draw the Euler diagram for the contrapositive.

If players warm up, then they run faster.

Contrapositive: If players do not run faster, then they did not warm up.

The X is outside “runs faster,” so it is also outside “warmed up.”

Answer: same nested diagram; X outside the outer region

1
Draw the Euler diagram for the contrapositive of “If a figure is a square, then it has four right angles.”
Show Answer

Contrapositive: If a figure does not have four right angles, then it is not a square.

Answer: square inside four right angles

2
Conditional: If you bought a ticket, then you have a seat. Plot Asha, who does not have a seat. What can you conclude?
Show Answer

Asha did not buy a ticket.

Answer: Asha did not buy a ticket

3
Use this diagram. Plot Ben, who bought a ticket, and Cam, who has a seat. What can you conclude about each?
Show Answer

Ben has a seat.

No conclusion about whether Cam bought a ticket.

Answer: Ben has a seat; no conclusion for Cam

4
Conditional: If a number is divisible by 10, then it is divisible by 5. Plot 35 and 40. What can you conclude about each?
Show Answer

40 is divisible by 10, so it is divisible by 5.

35 is divisible by 5, so it belongs in the outer region. It is not divisible by 10.

Answer: 40 is in the inner circle; 35 is in the outer ring only
