What to Remember

Segment Addition Postulate (numbers only)

If B is between A and C, then AB + BC = AC.

not drawn to scale

AB + BC = AC

8 + 5 = AC

AC = 13

Segment Addition Postulate (variable side lengths)

Label the pieces and the whole. Solve for x, then substitute to get a length.

not drawn to scale

AB = 3x + 1, BC = 2x, and AC = 21.

x = 4

AB = 3(4) + 1

AB = 13

Hard

With Quadratics

Draw the segment. Set the equation equal to 0, then factor.

Example
Draw the segment. Point B is between A and C. AB = x², BC = 5x, and AC = 36. Find AB.

not drawn to scale

AB + BC = AC

x² + 5x = 36

Set the equation equal to 0.

x² + 5x − 36 = 0

For x² + bx + c = 0, find two numbers that multiply to c and add to b. Here c = −36 and b = 5. Those numbers are 9 and −4.

(x + 9)(x − 4) = 0

x = −9 or x = 4

x = −9 makes BC = 5(−9) = −45. A length cannot be negative, so reject x = −9.

x = 4

AB = 4²

AB = 16
