Find Formula

Substitute the first term and the common difference, then simplify until uₙ is written in terms of n.

Jump to section:

SL 1.2

\(u_n = u_1 + (n-1)d\)

\(S_n = \dfrac{n}{2}\bigl(2u_1 + (n-1)d\bigr)\)

\(S_n = \dfrac{n}{2}(u_1 + u_n)\)

What to Remember

The nth-term formula

\(u_n = u_1 + (n-1)d\)

\(u_n\) = the formula

\(u_1\) = first term

\(n\) = the term number

\(d\) = common difference

Example. \(u_1 = 5\), \(d = 4\). Write a formula for \(u_n\).

\(u_1 = 5\)

\(d = 4\)

\(u_n = 5 + (n-1) \times 4\)

\(u_n = 5 + 4n - 4\)

\(u_n = 4n + 1\)

Easy 2

First Three Terms

Find the first term and the common difference, then the formula.

Example
The first three terms of an arithmetic sequence are 6, 10, and 14. Write a formula for \(u_n\).

The first term is the first number. The common difference is the jump from one term to the next.

\(u_1 = 6\)

\(d = 10 - 6\)

\(d = 4\)

\(u_n = u_1 + (n-1)d\)

\(u_1 = 6\)

\(d = 4\)

\(u_n = 6 + (n-1) \times 4\)

\(u_n = 6 + 4n - 4\)

\(u_n = 4n + 2\)

Answer: \(u_n = 4n + 2\)
