Sums

Pick the sum formula from the information you already have. A summation in symbol form can go straight into the calculator.

Jump to section:

SL 1.3

\(u_n = u_1 r^{n-1}\)

\(S_n = \dfrac{u_1(r^n - 1)}{r - 1},\ r \neq 1\)

\(S_n = \dfrac{u_1(1 - r^n)}{1 - r},\ r \neq 1\)

What to Remember

The sum of n terms

If you already know the first term and the last term, use

\(S_n = \dfrac{u_1 - r u_n}{1 - r}\), \(r \neq 1\)

If you know the first term and the common ratio, use

\(S_n = \dfrac{u_1(r^n - 1)}{r - 1}\), \(r \neq 1\)

When \(r\) is less than 1, the other booklet form keeps the denominator positive.

\(S_n = \dfrac{u_1(1 - r^n)}{1 - r}\)

Easy 1

Given u₁ and r

The first term and the common ratio are given.

Example
Find the sum of the first n terms.\(u_1 = 3\)\(r = 2\)\(n = 5\)Find \(S_{5}\).

\(S_n = \dfrac{u_1(r^n - 1)}{r - 1}\)

\(u_1 = 3\)

\(r = 2\)

\(n = 5\)

\(S_{5} = \dfrac{3\left(2^{5} - 1\right)}{2 - 1}\)

\(2^{5} = 32\)

\(32 - 1 = 31\)

\(2 - 1 = 1\)

\(S_{5} = \dfrac{3 \times 31}{1}\)

\(S_{5} = 93\)

Answer: the sum = \(93\)

1
